What is User Interface?

A User Interface (UI) here used synonymously for Graphical User Interface (GUI) having graphical elements for user interactivity.

user interface

A User Interface (UI) is a design created for easy interaction between a person and an information device.

A UI can be an application, a website or a program which can be accessed by using various menus or commands to access desired information.

Understanding UX

UX refers to User Experience.

According to Donald Arthur ‘Don’ Norman (Director, The Design Lab, University of California) “UX design is the process of enhancing user experience with a product by improving the usability, accessibility and pleasure provided in the interaction”.

UX is the process of development & improvement of quality interaction between a user & UI.

A User Interface Designer

To simply understand UX and UI

A UI Designer is the person who has:

a) Knowledge of colors and their mood.

b) Knowledge of designing basics.

c) A designing software (Ps, Ai, Cdr)

d) Ability to research and analyze (understanding UX) for creating simplified usability of a UI.

e) Critically evaluating ‘Your Design’ for making it ‘Their Design’. Welcome suggestion, apply sensibly.

Design BASICS

Design Principles

1. PROXIMITY

Content placed closer to each other to indicate it’s connected or associated. It becomes one visual unit and makes a clear structure of the layout.

2. ALIGNMENT

In a well-integrated design, the contents are grouped, organized and aligned to create a balance and order.

3. CONTRAST

Every information/content in a design should stand apart from one another but should look connected. Be it the text, color, elements, size, tone etc.

4. WHITE SPACE

It is like giving visual breathing room to the eye. Giving balanced spaced between the content increases readability & helps in highlighting importance.

KEEP IN MIND

  • Know your target user. Choose colors, fonts and every design element accordingly.
  • Keep app behaviours familiar to the user.
  • Keep the design simple and aesthetically (beauty) pleasing.
  • Keep the interfaces consistent throughout.
  • Listen to others as every person has different usage approach which might become valuable feedback.

The Power of Visual Effects (VFX) Before and After Shots

What is VFX?

visual effects (vfx) are the processes by which imagery is created or manipulated outside the context of the live action shot.

Visual effects require the integration of live-action footage and generated imagery to create scenes which look realistic, but would be dangerous, impractical, expensive, or impossible to capture on film. Visual effects using CGI have recently become accessible to the independent filmmaker with the introduction of affordable and easy-to-use animation and compositing software.

The Power of VFX: Before and After Shots

Many people may use special effects and visual effects interchangeably, there is a difference. It is easiest to think of special effects as effects that happen ‘in-camera’ while the visual effects magic happens in post-production, after the shoot.

Below you will find 15 fantastic examples of visual effects from the most popular films in recent time. From green screens to CGI, the people who work in the VFX industry are responsible for bringing many of your favorite films to life.

What is Layer in Photoshop ? How and Why to use it?

Photoshop layers are like transparents sheets/tracing paper sheets. You can see through each of them. Together they make composition of their content which can be seen and published as an output. Layer order can be changed at any time Any layer removal lead to loss of the content made on it.

Photoshop can be used for story boards, however those are typically done by hand.
Mostly, Photoshop is used to create concepts, or concept art to be handed off to the 3D modellers, maybe floorplans if they’re needed. It can be used to create Character Sheets, or other blueprints for objects to be used for 3D modeling.
The biggest use of photoshop in the animation industry is to create textures for 3D models

5 Stop Motion Mistakes and How To Avoid It

5 Stop Motion Mistakes and How To Avoid It

1. Animation Flicker

A lot of stop motion films suffer from flicker issues. If you are experiencing this two things:

Is the camera auto exposure turn on? It is the most flicker culprit. Auto exposure automatically brightens the camera image if the environment becomes dark when every time your hand moves in front of a camera. There are 5 Stop Motion Mistakes. When the Camera tries to compensate by making the image brighter, you see the camera tries to compensate by making the image brighter, and you see flicker in the frames when they are played back. Turning the Auto exposure off and fixes the problem.

Check that the lights behind you? Sometimes your shadow which can be almost invisible in a bright room becomes very visible when you are taking many pictures of it, and playing the pictures back at 15 FPS. Make sure the only lights in the chamber are the lights shining directly on the set.

2. Camera Shake

When you are animating a film with toy characters, you want the camera to be as still as possible or move gracefully as the camera does in a feature film.

The thing that never looks good is a camera image that is constantly wobbling off-kilter, as the animator bumps it with their sleeve. The best ways to avoid this types of problem is to fasten the camera down with tape or apply rubber bands, strategically.

Some animations made with the larger figures, animation get away with the camera shake, because an action is happening all over the room. But as a general rule, if you are making shorts with minifigs and action figures, you want the camera to stay still.

3. Low Frame Rate

A lot of animators post movies they made with still using the camera. They take a lot of pictures with the camera, then use a program like Windows movie makes to import the images, play them back and add sound in it.

The problem with this approach is that Movie Maker limits the speed at which these images are played back. As of the fastest frame rate Movie Maker allows eight frames per second. There are 5 Stop Motion Mistakes.

The easiest solution to this problem is to use a frame-grabbing application, which lets you set the frame rate to faster speeds. Pro animators work in the 12-24 frames per second range. There are 5 Stop Motion Mistakes.

4. Poor Camera Angles

Many of the amateurish films improved immediately if the camera was closer to the action. It doesn’t matter how great your camera is if it looks like the action is happening in the two city blocks away.

In the filmmaking, the animators always used a variety of shots to tell the perfect story in the right direction or angles.

5. Blurry Images

Some of the cameras have a fixed focus and cannot focus on the main objects closer than the 8-12 inches. These cameras not to be used for stop motion since you are typically animating something that’s 3-7 inches away from the lens.

Alternatively, some cameras have automatic focus. These cannot be used because the camera repeatedly loses focus every time your hand moves into the image.

Use cameras that can focus on the objects that are close to the lens have a manual focus ring and are prepared to adjust focus often.

Difference Between Animation And Motion Graphics

Difference Between Animation And Motion Graphics

Animation and Motion Graphics are the two words which are quite used in the Media industry and Entertainment. There is a huge difference between the Animation and Motion Graphics.

Why is there a need to know the Difference between Animation and Motion Graphics

Many people are using the term Animation in place of Motion Graphics and vice-versa since they think both terms are same.

Thus, understanding the differences not only help you realize a piece of knowledge but make you recognize that there are two different divisions where you can go. One is Animation Industry, and other is Motion Graphics Industry. Though both the divisions operate under the same roof, yet there is a divergence between the skills of the artists working on it.

1. Animation

The animation is any technique that implies images different from one another and played sequentially.

The animation is something where the modeling artists create a non-existing character with a computer, and a story is framed by other artists such as the Texturing Artists, Lighting Artists, Rigging Artists, and so on.

2. Motion Graphics

Motion Graphics is a broad term that usually defines computer-generated images that do not come from a 3D environment.

Motion Graphics are the various processes by which imagery is created and manipulated outside the setting of a live action by artists such as Compositors, Rotoscoping Artists, Matte  Painters, Keying Artists, etc.

What is Animation?

Earlier the Animation is made by exposing a series of frames or pictures which result in an illusion of apparent movement. At this age of Technology, we have High-Performance Workstation, which helped artists produce High Quality and more realistic animations.

Animation movies is a result of one’s vision and imagination. The most common examples of animation are the cartoon which you watched in childhood. There are many award-winning animated films. They are entirely based on fictional roles and build entirely in a studio of a number of studios. An animation film does not consist of real things or real human

The technique of photographing drawing or positions of models to create an illusion of movement when the film is shown in sequence.

What is Motion Graphics?

Motion Graphics is the process where Animation is embedded into a live action scene, i.e. something which is photographed using a real location, a camera, and actors. It is then processed using VFX Techniques, and various effects in the shot are composited into the scenery.

A matte painting is painted representing the landscape or distant location that allows filmmakers to create the illusion of an environment that is imaginary in real life otherwise impossible to build or visit

The truth is animation and motion graphics have a complex relationship. “Animators” and “motion graphics designers” tend to rely on very similar tools, both from a software perspective and from a craft perspective Such as Adobe After Effects, Maya, and Photoshop, MAXON Cinema 4D.
